Smoke and Summons Reviews
It's hard to read one of Holmberg's books and not be sucked in by it. I think I've spent my entire Sunday running around Dresburg and feeling very strongly about things and screaming at the characters haha. I don't know what it is about Charlie's books but she has a way of pulling the narrative right into your head until you're falling into it.
Smoke and Summons has been a fantastic read. I honestly believe it is one of a kind, quite unlike any book I've read before. It the kind of book that lea ...more
I was surprised at how much I loved this book. I was not drawn in during the first chapter and considered putting it aside for some library books, but the next moment I was caught up in the storyline and swiping as fast as possible to see what happens next.
The story moved quickly then suddenly slowed then was frantic again. It was jarring at first, but then I realized that the speed was matching the movement and situations for the main characters.
I enjoyed the way the story and the people unfol ...more
OoooOOOOOH! I got the chance to read this in advance, and wow! This is a seriously intense adventure with lots of twists and turns and high energy escapes! And creeeeeeepy magic! I would not normally pick up a book like this, and I feel like I should warn squeamish readers that there is, at one point, a lot of blood. Like, a LOT. But I really am gonna need the next one, because that was one heck of a cliffhanger ending!
A great read with some very interesting characters and a well thought out magic system where slaves are used as vessels that allow demons to be summoned into them.
The story centres around one of these slaves and a thief she runs into while trying to escape her summoner. Romance ensues as they hide, fight, betray and sacrifice in a story that has a satisfying ending but still leaves enough unanswered questions that you need to check when the next book is due.
I received an ARC of "Smoke and Summons", thank you very much for that!
All in all, I really enjoyed #1 of the Numina series and I am already impatiently waiting for #2. Although I was quite confused at the beginning of the novel and sometimes annoyed by Sandis, the action-packed story, interesting characters and an exciting new world could convince me and I finished the book in just two sittings! I don't want to spoiler anything, so just go ahead and put Smoke and Summons in your tbr pile!

This book had an interesting premise. Sandis is a slave being forced to be possessed by monsters. She discovers new information and flees, putting her on the run. Rone is a thief for hire who has been set and and his mother faces the consequences. These two are brought together trying to understand what is going on and stay alive.
However, this book falls into a pitfall that many Fantasy series fall into. As this is book one, it felt more like the rising action for book two then a developed stor ...more
I received this book well before it's release date in the hopes that I would give it a blurb for the cover. It's wonderful - it's action packed and the characters are empathetic. The unique world of dark wizards and creatures from another astral plane is fascinating. Put this book in your TBR pile, you won't be sorry!
This was a First Reads selection for January. I usually wait until close to the end of the month to grab my First Reads choice, after plenty of reviews have rolled in, but I was so excited to see Charlie N. Holmberg on the list that I snatched this one up right away. This is, without a doubt, her best piece yet.
The worldbuilding and character development in Smoke and Summons is extremely well done. You're handed everything you need to follow along and paint a mental picture through story progres ...more
